The compact car class is very popular with a lot of competition. For the past several model years, compact cars have gotten more efficient, more comfortable, and offer more features, unlike the stripped-down basic cars from years ago. Many people choose compact cars for their efficiency and sporty feel, and two popular models to choose from are the 2016 Hyundai Veloster and the 2016 Mazda3
The 2016 Hyundai Veloster is a three-door hatchback coupe with an integrated backseat door on the passenger side, which allows easier backseat access while maintaining the sporty look of the vehicle. It's available in four trims: Base, R-Spec, Rally, and Turbo, with the Turbo being the favorite among reviewers and drivers, alike. The 2016 Mazda3 is available as a four-door sedan or hatchback, and has a solid, standard exterior. There are five trims available: the iSport, iTouring, iGrand Touring, sTouring, and sGrand Touring, with the 's' models featuring a stronger engine than the 'i' models.
The 2016 Hyundai Veloster base model is equipped with a 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder engine that is paired with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed EcoShift Dual Clutch transmission that provides a solid 132 horsepower. The other models are performance-driven cars that are built with a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder turbo with either the 6-speed manual or EcoShift Dual Clutch and delivers 201 horsepower. The turbo models are very well-received, with Kelley Blue Book describing the 2016 Veloster as a "turbocharged compact with impressive power...and performance credentials." While it has a powerful engine for the compact class, it doesn't sacrifice fuel efficiency, getting an EPA rated 25/33 mpg (city/highway).
The 2016 Mazda3 is available with two drivetrains: the 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine that is available with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission and gets 155 horsepower with an EPA rating of 30/41 mpg (city/highway). The S models are equipped with a 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine with the same transmission option and gets 184 horsepower with a fuel efficiency rating of 26/35 mpg.
Hyundai has always received solid safety ratings, and the 2016 Veloster is no exception. It received 5-star ratings in government crash tests, and it is equipped with BlueLink - Hyundai's emergency system that has crash response, roadside assistance, and monitoring features for parents of young drivers. The Veloster also comes standard with airbags, traction/stability control, brake assist, and rearview cameras. The 2016 Mazda3 also boasts a 5-star safety rating and similar safety features to the Veloster including backup cameras and sensors. The Mazda3 does offer blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control.
Compact cars are popular because of their value, and in this case, the 2016 Hyundai Veloster excels. It offers America's best warranty with a 5-year/60,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty with a 10-year/100,000 powertrain warranty. It also offers a great package of features that come standard with the base model such as a power doors and windows, adjustable driver's seat, and 7-inch high-resolution LCD touchscreen that is Bluetooth compatible and allows you to stream music, receive messages, and make calls. Other models besides the base come standard with premium audio, leather seats, and a sport shifter. Regarding its value, Motor Trend says the Veloster "has plenty to offer due to the generous amount of standard features included especially in the Turbo model."
The 2016 Mazda3 offers a wide range of features on its models, but most of the higher-quality features are only available on the highest-end trims and as optional extras. With regards to the warranty, the Mazda warranty is 3-years/36,000 mile with a 5-year/60,000 mile warranty.
